Third graders learn about commas

We had a great day in third grade today!

We started with some division review for bell work.

In math we checked our practice test booklet.  They are coming home today.  We also did some 2 X 1 digit multiplication practice and decoding.

In reading we went to computers and worked on Lexia.

We worked with commas today.  We used them in numbers and in series.  (Ex. 2,034 and “I bought eggs, milk, and bread at the grocery store.”)

In science we did one of my favorite activities, using plastic eggs.  It is called “Eggs-Full of Sound.”  Each egg has an item in it.  The children have pictures of each item and 12 eggs on a piece of paper.  They place each item on a different egg.  Then I walk around, shaking one egg at a time.  They are then allowed to move any they want.  Then I let them pass around the eggs and shake each one.  Again, they are allowed to adjust their pictures.  Finally, I have them tell me (all at once) what they think is in a given egg and I open it.  Then, and only then, do we glue our answers down.  They use sound and the way the item feels when the egg is shaken to make guesses.
